Homemade Almond Butter

Homemade almond butter is easy to make in a food processor. Almond butter is a very healthy snack. When you first start grinding up the almonds with a food processor you get almond meal, but after about 15 minutes it turns into creamy almond butter.

This recipe uses raw almonds. I always use raw nuts – never roasted. Roasting introduces trans fats, which are not healthy for you. I buy raw almonds from Trader Joe’s here in Southern California. At this time, they go for about $4.49 per pound. One pound of raw almonds will make one jar of almond butter. Not only is this fresh almond butter very tasty, but also it is very economical. A similar jar of raw almond butter will go for about $8.00 or $9.00 in a health food store.

This is an updated recipe. I used to add a little almond oil when making almond butter (available from a local health food store). However, I find that it is not necessary to add any oil as long as you let the food processor run long enough to achieve a smooth consistency.

Homemade Almond Butter

Add 1 lb raw almonds and salt to a food processor, then grind them up. Allow to completely mix for several minutes until smooth and spreadable. It will depend on how dry the almonds are. Using a spatula, put finished almond butter into a canning jar when done.

Shown below is a shot of the ingedients and the food processor with a batch of almond butter in the works. A 1- lb bag of raw almonds is on the right.

After a thorough mixing in the food processor, the almond butter is creamy and spreadable and ready to scoop out with a spatula into a jar.

After processing the amond butter in a food processor, it is ready to put in a jar.
